Canadian North To Support Humanitarian Response To Caribbean Hurricanes
Canadian North confirmed on September 29 that it is pleased to actively participate in the humanitarian response to the recent hurricanes that have devastated much of the Caribbean.
It has positioned a Boeing 737-200 Combi aircraft and 12 crew members on the US Virgin Island of Saint Croix. Over the next 10 days, Canadian North team members will operate charter flights on behalf of the US Federal Emergency Management Agency, assisting with the urgent movement of passengers and goods between the US Virgin Islands of Saint Croix and Saint Thomas as well as San Juan, Puerto Rico.
This mission has been arranged through Momentum Decisive Solutions, a Toronto-based charter broker that helps to arrange specialized logistical support during crises such as this.
The versatile 737-200 aircraft which has been assigned to this mission is normally used for Canadian North’s daily scheduled flights throughout the Canadian Arctic. It has a large cargo door and a moveable bulkhead wall that enables it to carry flexible combinations of passengers and cargo on the upper deck, with additional cargo capacity in the baggage compartments underneath its main deck. The aircraft is also equipped with a gravel deflector kit that enables it to land on gravel and ice runway surfaces.
“Canadian North’s team members have been deeply moved by the images that have come out of the Caribbean over the past several weeks,” said Steve Hankirk, Canadian North’s President. “We’re proud that we have an exceptionally dedicated and caring group of team members who have been able to put together this complex mission under short notice. We are always eager to pitch in and help however we can.“
Canadian North is tentatively scheduled to be positioned in the Caribbean until October 8, but will be prepared to provide support beyond that date if requested.
