After more than 20 years of negotiations, Inuvialuit self-government is closer to becoming a reality than it has ever been before.
Negotiations for self-government began in 1996, when Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) and Gwich’in Tribal Council began negotiating for a joint self-government agreement. However, a final agreement was never reached.
Today, under the direction of IRC, Inuvialuit are negotiating self-government with the federal and territorial governments. In 2006, negotiations first began. An agreement-in-principle was reached in 2015. The parties have now begun the negotiation of a final self-government agreement, financial agreements and an implementation plan.
To make sure beneficiaries are aware of all the happenings concerning self-government, IRC has created a dedicated Facebook page. Make sure to 'like' the page to stay up-to-date.
