Preparing for the IRC Chairperson Election

Ahead of the 2026 IRC chairperson election period, we are providing some information about the nomination process. The official election notice, more detailed information and related forms will be issued in early December.

To qualify as a candidate for the 2026 IRC chairperson election, a person must: 

  • be enrolled as a beneficiary under the Inuvialuit Trust 
  • be an active member of an Inuvialuit community corporation 
  • submit a completed official nomination form
  • provide a criminal record check dated no earlier than November 20, 2025 
  • provide a $500 deposit in the form of a cheque or money order made out to IRC – this deposit is returned if the candidate receives at least four votes at the election 
  • not be declared bankrupt
  • not have been declared incapable of managing their property by a court 
  • not be in prison
  • not have been convicted of an offence punishable by five or more years in prison 
  • not have been convicted of an offence punishable by two or more years in prison within five years of the election date 
  • not owe IRC $200 or more and be 90 days or more in arrears

To nominate someone, a person must: 

  • be an active member of the same Inuvialuit community corporation as the person they are nominating
  • be an enrolled beneficiary of the Inuvialuit Trust
