Funeral Assistance Policy

Funeral Assistance Policy

The Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) Funeral Assistance Program (FAP) is intended to provide financial assistance to Inuvialuit beneficiaries when there is:

  1. A death, or imminent death of a beneficiary or an immediate family member of a beneficiary;

  2. A need for transportation of immediate family members to tie burial grounds of the deceased or payment of other reasonable funeral related expenses.

For the purpose of the FAP, the following definitions apply:

  1. Inuvialuit beneficiary means an individual who is enrolled or is eligible to be enrolled In the Inuvialuit Final Agreement (IFA) through IRC.

  2. Immediate family member means the spouse (including common-law), parents, parents-in-law, brothers, sisters, grandparents and children, including step, adoptive and foster children.

The immediate family members of the deceased, who are Inuvialuit beneficiaries, will select one family member to serve as the family coordinator to request travel or other assistance from IRC. All requests to IRC must come directly from the family coordinator. Requests from other persons will be referred to the family coordinator.

Any applications under the FAP must be made by the deceased person's family coordinator and must provide the following information:

  • Deceased name, address and date of death;

  • Name, address and relationship to the deceased of all members of the immediate family who require travel assistance and the type of travel assistance being requested;

  • Details of the related expenses for which assistance is being requested.

FAP funding may be provided up to a maximum of $2,000 per funeral.

Note: Within Aklak Air's scheduled or charter flight area, first right of refusal must be provided to Aklak Air. Within Canadian North's scheduled flight area, first right of refusal must be provided to Canadian North.
