Inuvialuit Greenhouse Food Security Initiative
ICEDO is proud to announce the start of our Greenhouse Food Security Initiative! Inuvialuit Community Economic Development Organization (ICEDO) has expanded our food security vision for the ISR, and has constructed 2 greenhouse growing domes on Industrial Rd alongside the Inuvialuit Country Foods Plant. We believe that growing our own food will strengthen food security in the ISR, while also providing a reliable supply of healthy, quality produce and foods.
Construction was completed with the help of 4 under-employed Inuvialuit Beneficiaries, who worked tirelessly through the hot (and cool) waves throughout the summer. The Beneficiaries are also transient, unemployed, or underemployed and looking for construction experience to develop their work experience.
The employees of the greenhouses are 3 Inuit youth summer interns, all under the age of 22. The interns are learning valuable transferrable skills such as leadership, quick and critical thinking, research skills, and several others. While some interns view this as a summer job, others are excited about the possibility of coming back to further refine their skills and gain valuable workplace experience. Below are some statements from the interns:
– “This is the first time I’ve been excited about a job”
– “I just wanted this job for the money, but I’m learning a lot now and actually like it”
– “I would come back next year to work at this job”
