Commitment to National Day of Truth and Reconciliation

September 16, 2022

Please note that the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) has taken note of the decision by the Federal government to mark the death of Queen Elizabeth II with a one-time closure of offices, and has, respectfully, decided not to participate. All IRC staff will be at work on Monday as they continue their efforts on behalf of all Inuvialuit.

As we all know, the Inuvialuit Settlement Region has endured decades of colonialism and oppression, and Inuvialuit continue to bear the burden of intergenerational trauma stemming from many colonial practices. We will never forget these harms.

On September 30, IRC will observe and recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation as a day of reflection and remembrance. IRC offices will be closed on that date.

In light of the above decision, IRC invites the Royal Family and the Federal Government to reflect upon their role in the colonization of Inuvialuit Nunangat.
